On foot, at a leisurely pace around the Arcachon Bay, we invite you to discover the intimacy of the area, through its delicate and ever-changing lights. Natural moments, small oyster ports, peaceful beaches, bird reserves, dunes, pines, marshes, deltas... and charming accommodations are waiting for you!

Between the Dune of Pilat and the Cap Ferret Lighthouse, this tour of the Arcachon Bay follows the best coastal paths and lets you experience the rhythm of the tides. After the elegant villas of Arcachon and the oyster ports, the route becomes more and more immersed in nature. Be tempted by a visit to the Teich Ornithological Park: lagoons, marshes, woods, and freshwater ponds full of wild birds. You’ll also encounter them at the Certes and Graveyron Estate in Audenge. To the north, you’ll pass through the Pres Sales Reserve before heading towards the famous Cap Ferret and its dunes, via the Claouey beach and L'Herbe village. At La Pointe (the tip of peninsula), the villas stand in the shade of the pines, with the ocean and views of the Banc d'Arguin... A daily pleasure, accompanied by local products during dinners or impromptu lunches in the oyster huts!

  • The tasting encounter with the oyster farmer
  • A visit to the Teich Reserve with an ornithologist
  • The crossing in a pinasse ( a type of boat) from Cap Ferret to the Banc d'Arguin via Bird Island and the Tchanquées huts.

Arcachon-Le Teich-Gujan Mestras

After reaching the Arcachon train station on foot (or by public bus line), a short train ride will take you to La Teste-de-Buch, the starting point of the day's hike. You will immediately be immersed in the oyster farming world at the port of La Teste-de-Buch, with its typical wooden huts. This atmosphere continues at the port of La Hume, after crossing the Prés Salés along a path that offers a constant view of the Bay. Visit the Teich Ornithological Park, on the Leyre delta: on either side of the trail, the vegetation is so dense in places that only the birds' songs, the sound of their takeoff, or the rustling of the reeds will give away their presence. But there's no doubt you'll spot a few pairs of swans or rarer birds. The route through the reserve ends in the shade of oak-lined paths perfect for a leisurely stroll. Visit of the Oyster House.

Ares - Les Prés Salés - Claouey - L'Herbe

Perhaps the most varied and typical stage: today, you will experience a wide range of atmospheres, unique to the bay, moving from its 'land' side to the 'Cap' side. The wild and natural atmosphere of the Pres Salés reserve is then replaced by beaches and ports that exude a vacation vibe as you cross through Claouey, Les Jacquets, and Piraillan. A few dunes may slow your pace, but they offer stunning panoramic views of the bay and the huts that line its shores. Finally, you will arrive at the pedestrian district of L'Herbe for a typical, peaceful night in an establishment that has been a true institution for many years!

Distance
18 km
Activity Time

A hotel remarkably located in the L'Herbe district. It may not be the most remarkable part of the stay, but without a doubt, it is the most typical!

A day that alternates between the ocean side and the bay side, taking you to the farthest tip of Cap Ferret, crossing peaceful pine forests, dream villa neighborhoods, and passing by the lighthouse. From the viewpoint at the tip, you'll have a unique view of the Banc d'Arguin and the Dune of Pilat, with the beach grasses carpeting the dunes in the foreground. Overnight near the Cap, where you can enjoy the bay evening lights, or perhaps admire the sunset on an ocean-side beach!

Lege Cap Ferret - Dune of Pilat

After a morning spent peacefully enjoying the area, transfer by boat. Optionally, you can enjoy an aperitif break with an oyster tasting on the Banc d'Arguin, a sandbank lost between the bay and the ocean. If sea conditions permit, we will then drop you off at the far southern end of the Dune of Pilat, to climb and cross it. Otherwise, you will disembark to the north and can quickly reach the dune from your accommodation.

Final evening near the bay with a view of the setting sun.

Hotel de La Plage Arcachon Cap-Ferret L'Herbe

The Hotel de la Plage: A Legendary Address in Cap Ferret

On the Cap-Ferret peninsula, just a few steps from the Arcachon Bay, the Hôtel de la Plage is an institution full of history. Built in 1860 to accommodate workers from the nearby forest operations, it gradually became a must-visit destination for lovers of authenticity. For several decades, it was run by Janine and Michou, who made it an iconic address in the village. Their warm welcome and dedication to local traditions contributed to its fame.

In 2011, Nicolas Lascombes and Stessy Faber took over the establishment and undertook a restoration that respected its history. After two years of work, the Hôtel de la Plage reopened in 2024, offering 12 rooms with discreet charm, a friendly restaurant, and a terrace where it's pleasant to gather. This renewal, blending modernity and tradition, makes it an ideal stop for an immersion in the spirit of Cap Ferret.

The Village of L'Herbe: The Authentic Cap-Ferret

Classified as a "picturesque site," the village of L'Herbe is one of the jewels of the Arcachon Bay. Its sandy lanes wind between colorful wooden cabins, remnants of a long-standing oyster farming tradition that is still very much alive. Here, time slows down: you stroll with the tides, savor fresh oysters with your feet in the water, and chat with the locals, guardians of an ancestral know-how.

At the heart of the village stands a unique monument: the Moorish chapel, built between 1884 and 1885 by Leon Lesca. This building, with its unexpected architectural influences, recalls the region’s history and the strong link between Cap-Ferret and Algeria at the time.

Staying at L'Herbe is to gift yourself a timeless escape, an immersion in a unique setting where nature and heritage meet harmoniously.
